But most people stay stuck in Gut Gridlock because they’re missing one key piece of information… Constipation is a self-perpetuating cycle.

Constipation begins when there’s a disruption in motility, imbalances in the gut microbiome, or both. This is often related to diet, but stress and other factors cause these changes, too. As constipation worsens, gas production increases and methane-producing bacteria are favored. You might still poop every day, but you don’t completely empty your bowels, causing stool to back up in the colon.

 

This buildup of stool increases methane gas production, which slows motility, worsening constipation. Common symptoms associated with constipation include gas pain, bloating, abdominal cramps or distension, nausea, loss of appetite, heartburn, and food sensitivities.

 

Many people try to fix this by adding more fiber, but fiber usually makes things worse because it ferments in the gut, and produces gas. In a healthy gut, this isn’t a problem. In a backed-up colon, fiber the gas gets trapped behind stool and makes symptoms worse.

 

Dietary changes are rarely enough to break the cycle. You need to get your bowels moving first before adding more fiber. Once your bowels are moving regularly, dietary changes help maintain that rhythm to keep it moving.
